World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
It is a global day of the United Nations that aims to enhance public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification and drought, as they are among the biggest environmental challenges of our days.
This day is celebrated on June 17 every year.
Every year, there are various means and topics to raise public awareness of the issues of desertification and drought, through the celebration of the Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
This year, the theme of the International Day to Combat Desertification is drought
“Rising from the Drought Together”
on the need for early action to avoid catastrophic consequences for humanity and planetary ecosystems.
Desertification is land degradation and loss of vegetation cover and biodiversity
It is primarily caused by human activities and climate changes.
This day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality can be achieved through problem solving, strong community participation and collaboration at all levels.
It requires more attention now.
As the land deteriorates and ceases to be productive, natural spaces deteriorate and are transformed.
Consequently, greenhouse gas emissions increase and biodiversity decreases.
and protect us from extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and sand and dust storms.
Therefore, the UNCCD Secretariat calls on the global community to treat the land as a limited and precious natural capital, thus prioritizing its health in recovery and pressing hard to restore the Earth’s ecosystems through the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. Everyone has a role to play, and everyone is a partner in the future.
